Umi Azlim's Mother Died Of Throat Cancer

PASIR PUTEH, May 3 (Bernama) -- The mother of Umi Azlim Mohd Lazim, the Malaysian woman sentenced to death in China for a drug offence, died of throat cancer today at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baharu.

Umi Azlim's father, Mohd Lazim Jusoh, 51, said his wife Umi Slaia Ibrahim, 46, was diagnosed with the cancer two months ago and her condition worsened two weeks later.

"As of noon today, I've not informed Umi Azlim about her mother's death. I'll tell her after the burial," he told reporters at his house in Kampung Tok Khamis, here Saturday.

Umi Azlim, 25, the eldest of six siblings, was sentenced to death by the Guangzhou High Court in May last year for trafficking in 2,983gm of heroin.

She has two years from the date of conviction to file an appeal and is currently being jailed in the province.

Mohd Lazim said his wife kept on mentioning their daughter's name.

However, she was also grateful for having met Umi Azlim in China at end of last year, he said.

Umi Slaia's body would be buried at the village's cemetery at 5pm today.

Umi Azlim's five other siblings, including one who is studying in Medan, Indonesia, had been informed and would return home this afternoon, Mohd Lazim said.
